Stream of Dust

Dust Dances in Infinite Light.

For eternity, endless specks of dust have churned with the wheels of nature. Gathering and dispersing, they witness the passage of time while traversing history. Both billowy and static, they reflect the polar extremes within each of us.

As the latest production of CCDC, Stream of Dust is the new creation by Resident Choreographer Sang Jijia following his award-winning work Meeting In-between Time. Featuring a troupe of over 40 dancers from the company as well as graduating students of School of Dance, HKAPA, the performance invites audiences to witness the motion of dust within a captivating stage and spectating space, as it floats and puts down roots while dancing with the light, rising and falling with the world around it.

01Waiting

It is difficult to escape this time of extreme weariness and absurdity. Only with uncompromising determination and passion, could we 'waste' time well in this chaotic world. 'Dance first, think later' - choreographer Duncan Tung welcomes the audience to clear their minds and search for insight into this torturing era.

跳或不跳、自困或被困、to be or not to be?

'IT'S NOT MY BODY' series began in 2014. With his unique dance sensibility and experimentation with the body, choreographer Tanki Wong recreates the purpose of dance through a duel of flesh and shadows. Coming to chapter 3.5 this time, the series continues its study of the human body and exploration of the motive of dance, inviting the audience to witness the dancers' choice: to dance or not to dance; to trap or not to trap oneself; and to be or not to be?

The lights go off – who do you remember? How much of oneself is visible on stage? The work revolves around the theme of what is 'seen', 'unseen', and 'ignored', responding to society with each individual in the group, in a metaphor of survival and disappearance. Choreographer KT Yau conducts a 'reduction' experiment, in which she searches for oneself's true state and creates value of their existence in a cramped environment.

The wind blows. Dandelion seeds flow in the air, drifting and not knowing where they will end up. An involuntary journey indeed, yet there's the wind, so they flow... Each and every move seems to be from a written script, and we are playing predetermined roles in a given circumstance.

Choreographer Rosalie Ng Hei-wai uses dance to portray the delusions imposed upon our souls, rousing us to our true selves which have been forgotten in everyday life.

The oppression is getting one step closer, yet I return to myself, like returning home. Am I not ? I am ? I could be ? The point of origins is to reflect on self-existence and emotions and use balloons to change the shape of the body. Is it abnormal to have emotions? The balloon slowly disappears and suddenly explodes is it a choice or being chosen? Former CCDC Senior Dance Artist Bobo Lai choreographs and performs Boiling Bo, creating a dance theatre work from daily life, stimulating the audience's imagination.

This is a Process

Is 'pǔ luó saì sī ' a destination? A person? An archive of a moving body? An avatar of a place? This process is like a serial drama about moving and experimenting. It is an echo, a march, where the body travels across different cultures and where different cultures flow through.

Starting from the experiences of an individual, this piece explores how the personal experiences are transformed into creative elements. A new space is constructed by combining continuous two-dimensional images and body movement - when it is immersed in the present moment, it also comprises new imagination.

The pandemic has inevitably changed the way we live. In an environment full of constraints and uncertainties, everyday life has become bizarre and ludicrous. In turn, our bodies have responded by embracing new understandings and feelings.

Through a striking minimalist duet, choreographer Choi Soyoung explores how the environment impacts our bodies subconsciously and reshapes its relationship with them. Following features at multiple dance festivals in Korea and London, this will be the piece's debut in Hong Kong, with its music created by Kim Jaeduk, recipient of 'Outstanding Music Composition' at the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2023.

We know others by their different names, and vice versa. Each of us has layers of identity beyond our names, such as "someone's son", "someone's husband", "someone from somewhere", etc. While various adjectives describe us, have we ever truly lived by our own name?

A creative breakthrough of conventional styles, In My Own Name is a thoughtprovoking work by Cho Inho, a choreographer best known for his modern interpretation of breathing and rhythm in traditional Korean dance. By combining dance, movement and live music performance, the piece will showcase the appeal of contemporary Korean dance to local and international audiences alike.

Quotation Dance

Can dance and choreography be owned, collected or belong to someone? As the third piece in the 'Copyrights Series' by Chung Da Soul, Quotation Dance raises further questions about the authorship, ownership, and copyrights of dance and choreography. On stage, she cites passages from other artists' works while constantly revealing their source. From a performer's body, object to sound and light, elements of choreographic works can never be fully replicated, and such 'imperfect quotations' form imaginary choreography and redefine the position of the author.

Inspired by the eponymous news programme without commentary by EuroNews, Shin Changho created NoCommentwith the belief that a picture paints a thousand words and reflects society through a more neutral lens. Guided by this ethos, he seeks to elicit discussions among audiences about the fundamental purpose of life and reveal its truth through abstract art. This is on full display in No Comment with its muscular moves and intriguing dance ensemble. Debuted in 2002, the work has been performed in Canada, Germany, and Italy with great acclaim.

Hauntology

'What makes our bodies dance?' Our body is a tangible form that however changes depending on time and condition. Philosopher Jacques Derrida said that the moment of 'change' is instantaneous like a ghost that disappears without a trace before it can be captured. In Hauntology, Kim Bora breaks away from established structural forms of choreography and tells about the boundary between reality and fantasy through nude performers. Dancing freely on stage like spectres, in their most primitive and naked form, they bring the audience in search of the purest essence of dance.

Kim Bora is the Artistic Director and Choreographer of Art Project BORA. Kim breaks down the concepts of genre and space with the body as a subject and discovers the original image and sense of transformation by exploring the original form of the body.

Kim's choreographic concepts are not verbalised. Although the structure is not expressed by language, her works contain abstract but imaginary images that are interpreted for each individual. She focuses more on image-telling, as the 'design' image of movement becomes a message by exploring the phenomenon of the body.

Little One

Regardless of our social status, all of us face different hidden dilemmas in the current age and society. Sometimes, they are mentioned; at other times, they are ignored. A single individual may have limited power to make a paradigm shift, but with the will to change, you can spark a revolution.

As the Director and Visual Designer of this work, Cici Chen portrays the inner and outer conflicts of one's survival by combining the dancers' movements and projections, while drawing on inspirations from her previous work experience. It provokes us to think about our day-to-day life in realistic terms and listen to those hidden 'voices'.

Whydoesthemooncome outatnight?

The piece originates from the mythology of the ethnic group, the Hlai, Hainan. By exploring the relationship between the sun, moon, and earth, creator Zhang Mie reveals her contemplations about fate. It is performed by a group of native Hainanese dancers, infused with local cultural features and music that incorporates dialogues in the regional Wenchang and Danzhou dialects. These elements blend and clash with contemporary dance, to present a performance steeped in the modern style.

If you don't move forward, you'll fall behind. What you perceive as regression might be the direction of my progress. If everyone favours a certain direction which I refuse to follow, am I then 'degenerating' in the eyes of others?

What is the definition of 'success'? Is success a necessity? Evolution and degeneration mean different things to each of us. This is a journey of self-doubt, self-realisation, and self-consolation. Choreographer Tai Chi-lun integrates objects of daily life into this work, distilling an aesthetic suffused with his personal style and presenting a 'theory of degeneration and evolution in 2023'.

Da Dad Dada

This self-documentary performance centres on Saori Hala's late father Ken Hara. Through dance, sound and video recordings from his lifetime, it describes how his long-term absence during her childhood and adolescence created fuzzy zones in the artist's life and memory. It is an attempt to reconstruct her impressions of her father as well as a discourse on a social issue. Ken Hara was an active musical dancer in the 1960s, the post-war golden years in which Japan was rebuilding itself and its economy boomed. Saori's memory of her father is vague and tenuous, dance has become an important connection between them. After their brief reunion and her father's death, she grew curious about his life as a musical dancer, thus embarking on a creative study through surviving works and recordings.

Intangible 'smoke' can represent our anxiety about the future, or an unverified piece of news. Filled with illusions, emotions, and imagination, it challenges us to deconstruct our real-life goals. Wearing what appears like gas masks and chasing and restraining one another on stage, the dancers conjure a mystical atmosphere with vibrant and dynamic movements. Choreographer Ikumi Kurosu, well-known for his passionate pursuit of unique and unconventional bodily concepts and movements, will be delighting the audience at the 'CCDF 2023' with his work debuted at the 'Yokohama Dance Collection' in 2020.

In recent years, there have been various methods of exploration and practice, which have extended into the perspectives of arts festivals and programme producers. The complexity of society, culture, dance language, space, media, technology and other aspects in the contemporary context has elevated the role and concept of dramaturgy. The Talk and Roundtable invite dance artists, dramaturgs and producers to share their experiences and envision future developments.
