Dir: Francesco Cabras and Alberto Molinari/ Chor: Akram Khan UAE/ 2011/ 81 mins/ In English, Arabic with Chinese and English subtitles The Akram Tree, winner of the 5th Jumping Frames International Dance Video Award last year, is back by popular demand. It is a journey through the personal and professional world of the British-Bangladeshi choreographer and dancer Akram Khan. The dancer manifested his body within a vast desert, in the immediate surroundings of the futuristic city Abu Dhabi, where he was showcasing his new production Gnosis, a piece realised in collaboration with seven artists he discovered from different parts of the world including India, Japan, Pakistan, England, Egypt, Iraq and Bangladesh. Drawing from sources both ancient and modern, Gnosis is inspired by the Hindu epic Mahabharata, in particular the story of Gandhari, the wife of the blind king who blindfolds herself for life to share his journey. The film intercepts Khan’s dialogues with artistic portrayal of his dancers and musicians in front of old junks in a fishing port and a city full of artificial glamour. He relates how his past influences his artistic visions and how he combines his classical Indian Kathak training with contemporary dance.

O My Body 導演:洛朗. 勒格 法國、卡塔爾/2012/72分鐘/法文、阿拉伯文/中英文字幕 Dir: Laurent Aït Benalla/ Chor: Abou Lagraa France, Qatar/ 2012/ 72 mins/ In French, Arabic with Chinese and English subtitles 編舞家阿布. Aims to serve as a bridge among Mediterranean cultures, choreographer and dancer couple Abou and Nawal Lagraa founded Algeria’s first contemporary dance company. For the inaugural performance of the Lagraas’ new work Nya, they selected ten male street hip-hop dancers with no qualifications to perform in their new choreography. For the first time, Ravel’s Bolero meets with traditional songs of the Aurès Mountains by Houria Aïchi. This dance documentary traces the evolution of the art piece and revisits the development of the dance troupe. A cinéma-vérité style brings an intimacy to the experiences of the dancers as they discover new body language and fresh ways to express themselves. An inspiring backstage look at the realisation of a unique dream.

Blush

Dir: Wim Vandekeybus Belgium/ 2005/ 52 mins/ In English, Russian, French, Spanish with Chinese and English subtitles As the founder of Belgium-based avant-garde dance company Ultima Vez, choreographer and director Wim Vandekeybus brings together a company of ten energetic and passionate performers who dance with basic instinct and fearless moves as if gravity, stamina, physical limitations and dignity do not exist in their vocabulary. Dramatic sequences present his dancers as daring creatures jostling and dueling at a frenetic pace, launching themselves wildly into the air and chasing their insatiable desires with irresistible lust. Most impressive is Vandekeybus’ amalgamation of film and dance. Mixing powerful symbolic visual languages and impressive landscapes, he successfully blends his dancers into the wilderness and spectacular attractions of the Corsica wild, with dancers splashing in front of the camera into the icy waters like ethereal mermaids. In dance sequences of attraction, confrontation and repulsion, the performers take on animal metamorphoses. Live music from David Eugene Edwards and his band cranks up the intensity, creating a sensational backdrop for the dancers’ moves.

This year Jumping Frames introduces eight outstanding works from two female dance video artists who have been pioneering the art of dance videos since the 1980s, Rosemary Lee from the U.K. and Hyonok Kim from South Korea. Rosemary Lee Rosemary Lee has been choreographing, performing and directing for over twenty years. Known for working in a variety of contexts and media, she has created large-scale site-specific work with cross-generational casts, solos for herself and other performers, installations and films. She has increasingly worked with film and video, closely collaborating with a range of artist/filmmakers (Peter Anderson, Nic Sandiland and David Hinton). These projects have included short films for broadcast purposes like Boy, Greenman, Infanta and Snow, which we shall present in this programme. Rosemary’s interest in process and searching for new contexts to present work led her to create The Suchness of Heni and Eddie. In 2009 Rosemary was commissioned by Dance Umbrella and Greenwich Dance to make Common Dance which led her to even larger scale work for over 200 dancers for Dance Umbrella 2011 in central London. Rosemary regularly guest teaches and lectures in the U.K.

Kyonok Kim Kyonok Kim studied French Literature at the Korean University and later became an actress. She then decided to change her career to dance at the age of 23. She studied in Paris and became the first Korean to obtain a PhD degree in dance. Afterwards she spent seven years in New York working as a choreographer and dance filmmaker, and studied film making at New York Film Academy. Her work L’heure du Coq was selected by Video Dance Festival of the Paris Pompidou Centre in 1980s while Night, Divide Yourself was selected for a Gold Award from the Dance on Camera festival in New York. It was the first ever Asian awardee in the festival. This programme showcases her works from 1991 to 2013 which highlight her pursuit in search of Korean and Asian identities and aesthetics. The concept of time and space from a Korean and Asian perspective in particular.

BOY

Filmed on the Norfolk coast, the film explores the imaginary, magical world of a eight year old boy who conjures up his imaginary twin while strolling along a deserted beach. Rippling with animal imagery and shamanistic conjuring, it is about the boy’s perceptions of the world and his realisation of his place in the universe.

小公主

Greenman

In an attic in an empty stone tower, a solitary man paces and listens. There is something unnerving about him. With his boots worn out, his hands dirty and his long heavy coat swaying along the way, he explores his relation with the gloomy environment. He is joined by a magical companion, a large desk, which turns out to be a gateway to another world. The colours, textures and shapes of natural phenomena like leaves, nuts, stones and water soon evolve into a dramatic kaleidoscope of evocative images - a lyrical portrait of the individual in an increasingly dehumanized environment.

Infanta

Dir/Chor: Rosemary Lee and Peter Anderson UK/ 1998/ 5 mins/ Commissioned by BBC2 and Arts Council England as part of a Dance Night Christmas Infanta is a magical vision of the secret life and imagination of an eight year old girl. Set in a formal but neglected garden, the girl dances with compelling assurance as she leads the camera deeper into the garden and her own perceptions.

李 英國/2003/8分鐘/BBC2英國廣播電台、NPS及英國藝術文化委員會「光影舞步」之委約作品 Dir: David Hinton/ Chor: Rosemary Lee UK/ 2003/ 8 mins/ Commissioned by Arts Council England, the BBC and NPS as part of the last Dance for the Camera series 導演大衛. Snow is the second film from renowned director David Hinton, constructed solely from archival footage of winter antics dating from the 1890s to the 1960s. The film creates the narrative and choreographic structure from found movement of a bygone era; sometimes from a well spotted gesture, and at other times from the careful juxtaposition and repetition of shots. The effect is often comic, partly because of the inherently funny sight of people slipping about on ice, but also from the comic associations of early black and white films from the likes of Buster Keaton and Charles Chaplin.

Isle of the Waiting Soul Souls are believed to be wanderers waiting to go to another realm after death...to an isolated metaphoric isle. Isle of the Waiting Soul conveys their journey. The dancers, wearing red and white costumes, are juxtaposed to represent the spirituality and harmony of nature and the suffering and conflict of life.

Night Divide Yourself, an experimental dance video directed by Jean de Boysson in collaboration with choreographer Hyonok Kim, is based upon a contemporary work by Korean-born composer Isang Yun. The text for the composition is taken from three poems from Teile dich Nacht, Die letzten Gedischte by Nelly Sachs. Hyonok Kim’s choreography evokes the image of a black bird precariously balancing heaven on one wing and hell on the other. The video explores, through movement and visual juxtaposition, the uneasiness of the soul bound to the body, and the relationship between the instinct for survival and the desire for release and liberation. Through the interweaving of the sea and infinite darkness with images of struggle and release, tension and suspension, enclosure and escape, the tape attempts to convey the humanistic spirit of Isang Yun’s composition.

Inspired by Italian Renaissance paintings and Michaelangelo’s Pietà, the film uses expressive dance movements to lament the loss of one’s beloved. A woman is mourning at the edge of madness; a man is supporting and watching over her, not letting her fall.

The spiral dance stance, representing streams of consciousness after death, illustrates the wishful journey to rebirth with the beloved one. Inspired by Korean Buddhist monk dances and transcendental fantasy, the time of searching and waiting to reunite, meets light and is followed by a mysterious flow.

Dir: Santiago Mitre/ Chor: Juan Onofri Barbato Argentina/ 2013/ 55 mins/ In Spanish with Chinese and English subtitles Up-and-coming young director/writer Santiago Mitre has been hailed as the Argentinean version of Aaron Sorkin (screenwriter of The Social Network). This time he joins hand with choreographer Juan Onofri Barbato to create a very cinematic dance piece titled Los Posibles. In 2010, Juan Onofri Barbato founded his own troupe KM29, a name stemming from the local transportation hub which is super busy over the day but turns into a world of anarchy at night, where desire and violence prevail. Such wild possibilities are exactly the inspiration of Los Posibles. Such tensions, however, are not being interpreted as ruthless collision on stage, but rather as precipitation of youthful confusion. Seven dancers in slow motion play out their life struggles in a series of street scenes.

All This Can Happen Dir: Siobhan Davies and David Hinton UK/ 2012/ 51 mins/ In English with Chinese and English subtitles A flickering dance of intriguing imagery brings to light the possibilities of ordinary movements from everyday life as they appear, evolve and freeze before your eyes. Made entirely from archive photographs and footage from the earliest days of moving image, All This Can Happen follows the footsteps of the protagonist from the short story The Walk by Robert Walser. Juxtapositions, different spends and split frame techniques convey the walker’s state of mind as he encounters a world of hilarity, despair and ceaseless variety.

The girl who plays hopscotch on the island disappears, dropping out of the normal “orbit” and falling into the dark side of the world, limping and trembling her way through... leaving behind one of her black shoes at the playground of the human world. Man-made disaster is bound to leave a tragic mark in the depths of our minds and Cheng Li-ming, the creator of this dance piece, is convinced that it is his duty as a human being to fight against nuclear power. “In this day and age, we must work together to survive; as we go through the same space and time, we also share the same painful experience.”

With the camera focused on the plight of a battered prisoner, deprived of his freedom, and in pain until his last breath, Director Leecat Ho considers the power of an individual’s conviction and the legacy of their sacrifice. The prisoner’s body might have vanished but his spirit will survive, blossoming in a flicker of eternal sunshine. This is one of the commissioned works of the 5th Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival and was selected in Short Film Corner, Festival of Cannes 2013.

Dance for Ice

Dir: Tuukka Temonen/ Chor: Pole Art Ensemble Vertiga Finalnd/ 2012/ 2 mins

Hong Kong directors Adrian Yeung and Guy Cheung join forces to collaborate with dancer Chen Xie-wei of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company as one of the commissioned works for the 4th Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival. This is a study of the concept of ‘interface’ in the context of physical, chorographical and visual communication. The artists use the body, movement and visual effects to act as means for communication and interaction, resulting in a complex amalgamation of dance and images.

Greenpeace’s “Dance for Ice” campaign challenged dancers to pole dance to save the North Pole. The Finnish dance group Pole Art Ensemble Vertiga won the competition, and is starring now in this Greenpeace video to save the Arctic. As the Arctic iceberg is slowly disappearing, red-hair dancers hop and jump into the Nordic forests, spin around their “poles” anticipating the heartbeat of the Globe...

Dir: Mohammed Walid Ayyad Kuwait/ 2011/ 9 mins

Dir & Chor: Anna Potapova Russia/ 2012/ 5 mins

Are you ready to fight for your dream? The lady on wheelchair is suffering from multiple sclerosis, with eyes closed, she is holding onto her little ballerina doll. As her hands gently open up to the sky, her eyes sparkling with a dream that won’t be bound by the physical limitation of her wheelchair. The director’s statement is clear: the fundamental enemy we need to win over is actually our own self.

This is a story about love, strange love set within the mechanical roller-coaster world of an amusement park. Black-gloved women drag their dreaming partners along the floor, pulling, shaking and holding on them tight. The men suddenly awakened to a quick counter-attack. Through this symbolic dance carousel, director and choreographer Anna Potapova successfully depicts the complex love-hate relationship between two sexes. Maybe only through dance can two living persons find the path of reconciliation.

If paper umbrellas can be elevated from everyday usage items to works of art, so can heritage buildings. With a paper umbrella, a song and the streets of the City of Tainan, director Maurice Lai makes us reflect on urban development. In the course of four centuries, Tainan was subjected to multicultural influences. For the past 20 years, it has been at the crossroad of the transition from old to new in its urban development. How much of the ancient capital should be preserved? How much should be demolished for the sake of development? The film looks back and examines past values. By choosing the filming locations from an architectural and humanistic point of view, Tainan architect Tsai Chiang Kuo Chi enriches the work with greater depth and affection. This film is one of the commissioned works of the 5th Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival and was selected in Short Film Corner of Cannes Film Festival 2013.

But Myself

“When you really love dancing, you will stick with it at all times.” Our two Chinese dancers Yang and Lao immerse themselves into the urban texture of Portugal, in pursuit of inspirations and cross-cultural enlightenment. Their means of cross-cultural communication are none other than their own bodies, which were liberated from their usual boundaries of the stage to the open air of the public space. Bold steps are made not only in the dance movement, but also in the break off from the stiff norms of Chinese ideologies. Fado singers improvise joyously with the two oriental bodies, as the dance finds its way into the dark corners of the city.

In a desert village somewhere in North Africa, cold wind and bird cries fill the air of the ruins, mingled with murmurs that resemble low prayers or soft sobs. Maj’noun, the lone soul, roams the old buildings, appearing along the pipelines or clinging on the brick walls, dancing his way along. A call of wild from the rooftop; a tree burning in the dark… Maj’noun is in mad pursuit of his lost love, pouting his way through the wilderness. Inspired by Bedouin nomadic poet Qays Ibn al-Mulawwah’s and French writer Louis Aragon’s works, Hazem Berabbah and Elsa Pernot’s contemporary dance piece is a free love song that transcends the limits of language, culture, religion, space and time.

Football is basically a show spearheaded by a coach, but in this dream theatre of the Country Club, the player is the coach in black. Two lady onlookers leave the field after a fight over the ball, while the key player is kicked out after a display of red card. A quick change of scene leads us into the locker room, the best place for unleashing the secrets to pride and prejudice. Moving onto the club pool, our coach now becomes the lifeguard, while two men and a woman exercise a game of romance. Can the country club serve as the lady director’s playfield? Can she reverse the social roles of men and women and break away from the norms? Israeli director cum choreographer Noa Shadur is not only familiar with the identity game in play, but also a skilled player in the international dance arena.

Filmed on location in a crystal mine and an abandoned copper quarry, two dancers clad in gem-coloured silk are captured through prisms of light and through layers of spun glass. The movement of this duet displays recognisable postures and steps from Bharatanatyam. This poetic site-specific dance for camera film, adapted from an original work by Natasha Bakht, gives expression to line, colour, light and angles, breaking up the frame in unpredictable and exciting ways. The precise gestures of the choreography are revealed and obscured as the layers of glass shift – reflecting and refracting the sun as the dancers move through the day perpetually guarding ‘dafeena’, the Urdu word for ‘buried treasure’.
